Food contact materials are all materials and articles intended to come into contact with foodstuffs, including packaging materials but also cutlery, dishes, processing machines, containers etc.
Since food contact materials may cause unpredictable safety risk to food and human health, most countries have established strict regulations, directives or criteria targeting food contact materials, especially in the EU and US. For example, all food contact materials exported into EU and US must be tested and certified.
